Karzai: Afghans want rules for troops changed
07-27-2009
•
AP
President Hamid Karzai said he wants new rules governing the
conduct of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan and would be willing to talk
with Taliban leaders who publicly renounce violence and endorse peace.
But Karzai, acknowledging shaky relations with his international
partners in the war on terror, told The Associated Press in an
interview that he was not prepared at this time to discuss the key
Taliban demand " a timetable for the withdrawal of all foreign troops.

07-27-2009
•
AP
The government said Monday that new U.S. home sales rose by the largest
amount in nearly nine years last month, in another sign the housing
market finally is bouncing back from the worst downturn in decades.
The Commerce Department said sales rose 11 percent in June to a
seasonally adjusted annual rate of 384,000, from an upwardly revised
May rate of 346,000.

Top Soccer Official to Invite Obama to World Cup
07-27-2009
•
AP
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has specific ideas on upgrading the
popularity of soccer in the United States. He hopes he has an eager
listener in President Barack Obama.
Blatter plans to extend a personal invitation to Obama to attend the
2010 World Cup in South Africa when the two meet at the White House on
Monday.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, Blatter said the
invitation has been extended and that he will "confirm it" at the
meeting.
"I know there are people around the president who are football fans,
and that they will make everything possible in his agenda that the
president be at the opening of the World Cup or the final," Blatter
said.

"A Thermal Ground Plane is basically a materials system,” Nadler explained. “The most thermally conductive natural material, pure diamond, has a conductivity of about 2,000 watts per meter Kelvin. We’re aiming for 20,000, and to do that we have to look at the problem from a materials systems standpoint.”

The phase out of energy-wasting light bulbs begins on Sept. 1 in Germany. The unpopularity of the energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs that will replace them is leading consumers and retailers to start hoarding the traditional bulbs

Martial Law and the Militarization of Public Health: The Worldwide H1N1 Flu Vaccination Program
07-27-2009
•
globalresearch.ca
The Worldwide H1N1 swine flu pandemic serves to mislead public opinion. The 2009 pandemic, which started in Mexico
in April, is timely: it coincides with a deepening economic depression.
It takes place at a time of military escalation. The epidemiological data is fabricated, falsified and manipulated.

Natural Gas Supply Crisis
07-27-2009
•
arclein
Now, that may be a picture that gets some people excited, but not me. I know that unconventional shale gas wells deplete very rapidly, paying out 60 to 90% of their production in the first year. It takes a great deal of drilling to maintain overall production rates, and in a low-price environment like today's, the prospects for additional drilling are dubious.
For the straight dope on the North American peak question, I turned to David Hughes, the now-retired Canadian geologist who is a bona-fide expert on North American gas.
He pointed out that it has taken 33,000 successful gas wells per year to exceed the 2001 peak, and noted that rig counts are still well down from last year. (According to Baker Hughes, gas rigs operating in the U.S. are now down to 665, the lowest number since May 2002, and off 59% from September of last year.) It's hard to imagine how this will not result in diminishing supply, and Hughes expects we'll feel the effects some time in the next six to

Comet Soot Revelation
07-27-2009
•
arclein
We can also agree that this comet carries water in particular. Unfortunately, this has leaned heavily on the thinking of theorists and it has been supposed that as the comet approaches the sun that the increased warmth helped create a cloud. I do not think it has much to do with warming at all. Much more likely, the dust mass progressively charges up because of increased radiation from the sun. This induces charge accepting particles to separate, and of course the comet is an accumulation of dust.
I suspect that the main charge accepting particle is carbon soot. Thus a comet is a mass of fine condrite dust, water and ammonia vapor and lots of free carbon soot.

Forget Aloof, Bernanke Goes Barnstorming
07-26-2009
•
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/27/business/27berna
Ben S. Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve,
is on a publicity campaign with a message: the central bank is here to
help, and it is not as mysterious or menacing as people might think.
In a profound departure from the central bank’s tradition as an
aloof and secretive temple of economic policy, Mr. Bernanke has plunged
into the public spotlight to an extent that none of his predecessors
would have contemplated.
He has given a television interview to “60 Minutes” on CBS,
including a tour of his hometown, Dillon, S.C.; held what amounted to a
televised news conference; and written newspaper commentaries to
explain the Fed’s efforts to fight the financial crisis.
On
Sunday, Mr. Bernanke reached another milestone in his evolution from
Fed chairman to Fed showman, participating in a one-hour town
hall-style forum here organized and moderated by Jim Lehrer of “The NewsHour” on PBS. Like
a political candidate on the campaign trail " inde
